The Usambara Mountains, situated in the northeastern part of Tanzania, are known for their pleasant climate, incredible viewpoints, and fertile slopes. The Usambaras consist of two major mountain blocks: the East and West Usambaras. The East, which is less developed, is near the coast with slightly higher rainfall and hosts Amani Nature Reserves with botanical gardens, butterfly farming, tea & spice plantations. The West Usambaras are separated from the East by a valley of about 4km wide. The West Usambara is easily reached from Lushoto, while the East is easily reached from Muheza.
The Usambaras, part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, which run parallel to the Tanzanian coast extending into Taita Hills in Kenya, is home to more than 3000 plant species with over 600 tree species. The exceptionally diverse nature with birds, trees, flowers, and butterflies is an attraction to all nature lovers. Usambara Mountains is a place to take short half or fewer day trips—hiking and visiting the Wasambaa villages to glimpse the daily life of Sambaa people and other ethnic groups such as Sambaa, Kilindi, Zigua, and Mbugu.
Due to the land’s fertility, German colonialists established their presence in the Usambara; thus, you will have an opportunity to see many historical sites.
