The Mkomazi National Park, designated as a Rhino sanctuary, is a spectacular 3,500 square kilometre wilderness in northern Tanzania. To the North East is the view of Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Looking to the south, your eyes are met with the Pare and Usambara Mountains. Kenya borders the park on the Northern side; thus, herds of elephants, oryx, and zebras migrate from Tsavo National Park in Kenya, forming one of the essential ecosystems in East Africa.
The arid savannah grassland reserve is covered in grey-green nyika, acacia trees, baobab trees, and rocky hills. While at Mkomazi, you can expect to see about 78 mammal species, including giraffes, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland, impala, and grant's gazelle, elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and cheetah.
Mkomazi is a vital refuge for two highly endangered species, the charismatic black rhino and the sociable African wild dog, and the Rhino Sanctuary is open to the public from 2020.
Moreover, there are more than 400 recorded species of birds, including Doves, hornbills, weavers, guinea-fowl and martial eagle, and violet wood-hoopoe.
